How to Apply Plaster to Shower Walls

If you’ve ever thought about the prospect of never having to scrape mold, mildew, or any other kind of dirt out of the grout in your bathroom tiles, you should know that there is a possibility of this option!

Plastering the shower walls is the solution that you have been looking for. Many of our clients ask whether Lime Plaster can be used inside shower cubicles. Without a doubt, plaster application to showers can be rather challenging.

But yes, natural lime and/or cement based plasters can be readily applied inside showers to upgrade a regular bathroom to a high-end, elegant space. A sleek, eco-friendly finish like Meoded Concretta Plaster is an excellent option for the shower.

We’ve put together a quick and easy guide regarding the basics of applying Venetian plaster to shower walls.

How to apply Venetian plaster inside shower walls

Here’s our breakdown of how to apply plaster to your shower walls..

1. Make the faucet handles waterproof

Place silicone behind the handle rings when fixing the faucet to the wall. It is fine to place the silicone in the ring’s top arch.

2. Placing plaster over a membrane that keeps water out

For new construction, make sure to waterproof the shower walls and floor as if you were placing tile next. For example,

Apply a layer of fiber-reinforced plaster over the shower box surface if there is a waterproofing membrane. Once dried, cover the tap and faucet handles with a polyester or fiberglass mesh.

Using the same fiber-reinforced plaster, apply a second layer to the surface. When the second layer is dry, apply the same mesh to the whole shower wall and secure it with fibrous plaster.

Another option is to install a water-proof cement board, tape the seams, and apply a water-proofing membrane on top.
Consult with your local general contractor before starting this project.

3. Using plaster to cover tiles

If you want to plaster bathroom walls over existing tiles, you can use Meoded Concretta Plaster right on top! It is recommended to apply three thin layers of Concretta Plaster to properly fill in the grout lines and make the surface smooth. Allow a minimum of 48 hours for your first coat to dry and 72-96 hours for your final coat to dry before applying a sealer.

4. Apply your desired plaster finish

After the walls and floors are completely waterproofed, you may now apply the plaster straight to the shower walls.

5. Seal the shower tray with silicone

Use anti-mold silicone to fill the gap between the shower walls and tray.

By following these steps you will achieve a durable and flawless plaster finish inside your shower.

Your shower walls will not only look stunning, but they will also remain mold-free and could last a lifetime in your bathroom if you take care of them.
