Everything You Need to Know About Sapphire Metallic Paint

Metallic Paint transforms any surface with rich, multidimensional color and depth, delivering modern elegance and refined style.

Why Sapphire Metallic?

Sapphire Metallic is crafted using fine natural mica powders instead of traditional aluminum-based pigments. This unique formulation provides a more durable, long-lasting finish that resists wear while offering a more natural shimmer that complements any space. Unlike standard metallic paints, mica-based metallics are more eco-friendly, low-VOC, and safe for indoor use, making Sapphire Metallic an environmentally conscious choice for your interiors and exteriors. In addition, this metallic paint is fully tintable, allowing you to customize the shimmer to any color palette, giving you complete creative freedom. Standard paints simply cannot replicate the depth, movement, and light-reflective quality of a true metallic finish, making Sapphire Metallic the ideal solution for walls, furniture, trim, and feature details that demand sophistication and lasting impact.

Application Tips:

Ready-to-use and versatile — simply stir thoroughly before application.
Sapphire Metallic can be applied with a brush, roller, or HVLP/airless sprayer. For the most seamless, uniform finish, spray application is recommended, though brushes and rollers can be used for decorative or textured effects. Apply in temperate conditions between 50°–90°F and 25%–75% relative humidity to maintain the paint’s wet edge. Two or more coats are typically needed to achieve the desired depth and pearlescent effect.

Surface Preparation:
All surfaces must be clean, smooth, and free of dust, oils, or loose paint. Sapphire Metallic will not adhere to shiny surfaces such as vinyl, glass, or semi-gloss/gloss finishes. Previously painted surfaces should be primed with a recommended multipurpose primer or basecoat to ensure proper adhesion and consistent color.

Spray Application:
For spraying, use a turbine-powered HVLP or conventional cup gun. Dilute with up to 10% distilled water (about 12 fl. oz. per gallon), and use a #2–3 needle with approximately 25–35 psi at the gun and 75–90 psi at the tank. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator in a well-ventilated area. Regular stirring is essential to maintain consistency, and avoid heavy application to prevent pooling or dripping.

Exterior and High-Traffic Areas:
For exterior surfaces or high-traffic interiors, protect the finish with Meoded Cristallo Clear Coat. Two coats typically provide adequate protection; three coats are recommended for extra protection.

Coverage:

  • Quart: 62.5-75 sq. ft. for 2 coats
  • Gallon: 250–300 sq. ft. for 2 coats
Coverage varies depending on surface porosity, texture, and application technique

Key Benefits:

  • Interior & exterior use
  • Rich, pearlescent, multidimensional finish
  • Tintable to any color
  • Customizable texture with brush, roller, or spray
  • Durable, long-lasting, and environmentally conscious
  • Smooth, reflective surfaces that elevate walls, furniture, and trim

SAHARA EFFECT INSTRUCTIONS:

Surface Preparation – All surfaces must be clean and free of dust, dirt, oils and grease. Make sure the surface is sound and free of loose and flaking paint. Meoded Sapphire Metallic will not stick to shiny surfaces including vinyl, glass, and semi-gloss/gloss surfaces. Prepare the substrate with the recommended water-based primer over the previously painted surfaces or basecoat. It is recommended to tint the primer to a similar color as the finish coat of Sapphire Metallic.

Sahara Lines Application Method –  First Coat: Roll on a layer of Sapphire Metallic

Paint, and allow it to cure completely for 12 hours. Second Coat: Add 3.0 lbs. of glass beads to 1 gallon of Sapphire Metallic paint and stir well. Use a decorative brush to coat the surface creating either horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or multidirectional lines. Immediately after, take a clean brush to smoothen the surface and straighten the lines.

It can also be heavily applied with a roller, followed immediately by a clean brush to create lines and texture in the desired pattern.

Sahara Fabric Application Method – The fabric technique uses a rigatto tool to design the Sahara fabric look with vertical and horizontal lines. First coat: Add 3.0 lbs. of glass beads to 1 gallon of Sapphire Metallic paint and stir well. Use a 4” brush to coat the surface creating horizontal lines. Immediately after, use a rigatto tool to smoothen the surface and straighten the lines. Once the lines have been straightened, take a clean brush to smoothen the lines once again. For full dry time, wait 12 hours. Second Coat: Use a 4” brush to coat the surface creating vertical lines. Immediately after, use a rigatto tool to smoothen the surface and straighten the lines. Once the lines have been straightened, take a clean 4” brush to smoothen the lines once again.

Exterior Application – It is recommended to protect Sapphire Metallic with Meoded Cristallo Clear for exterior applications. 2 coats will usually provide adequate protection, while 3 coats are recommended for high traffic areas. Cristallo Clear is available in both matte and semi-gloss sheens.

Coverage without Sahara Beads

Quart – covers approximately 62.5-75 sq ft for 2 coat application.

Gallon – covers approximately 250-300 sq ft for 2 coat application.

Coverage depends on surface porosity and texture.

Coverage with Sahara Beads

Covers approx. 140-180 sq. ft. per gallon; using the Sahara Fabric technique.

Covers approx. 150-220 sq. ft. per gallon; using the Sahara Line technique.

Coverage depends on surface porosity and texture.

Check color and consistency before use. Stir Sapphire Metallic thoroughly before and during application to maintain uniform pigmentation. Do not apply below 50°F or above 90°F, in direct sun, or in conditions with low humidity or high heat, as this may affect the wet edge and final appearance.

All surfaces must be clean and free of dust, dirt, and oils. Make sure the  surface is completely smooth, dull, and free of loose or flaking paint. Sapphire Metallic will not stick to shiny surfaces including vinyl, glass, and semi-gloss/gloss surfaces. Prepare the substrate with the recommended tinted primer over the previously painted surfaces or basecoat.

Application Methods – Sapphire Metallic can be applied with a brush, roller, or HVLP/airless sprayer. Use only high-quality tools with metallic paints. When using a roller or brush, apply quickly in one direction, from joint to joint, keeping a wet edge while working. A strié effect may be created by applying with a brush in vertical or horizontal fashion. A roller may be used in a random pattern to create a unique finish as well. Other decorative painting tools and techniques may be used to create your desired results. It is important to note that a uniform finish is not achievable with metallic paints if rolled or brushed on like standard acrylic paints. For a uniform finish with no brush textures, we recommend a spray application. Apply only during temperate conditions: 50° to 90°F and between 25% and 75% relative humidity. Higher temperatures and lower humidity may cause the paint to lose its wet edge.

To spray Sapphire Metallic, use a Turbine powered HVLP or Conventional cup gun (airless is not recommended). Dilute with up to 10% water, approximately 12 fl. oz. of distilled water to one gallon of paint. It is recommended to use a needle size between #2-3. Recommended air pressure at the spray gun, approximately 25-35psi, with greater pressure at the tank, approximately 75-90psi. Use a NIOSH approved respirator when spraying in an adequately ventilated area. If applied too heavily, pooling and dripping may occur. Regularly stir the paint while working. Two or more coats are usually required to obtain the desired look.

It is recommended to protect the finish with Meoded Cristallo Clear Coat for exterior applications or any high traffic areas. Two coats will usually provide adequate protection, while three coats are recommended for high traffic areas.

Sapphire Metallic Paint FAQs

Metallic paint is a decorative coating formulated with fine reflective particles, such as natural mica, that create a shimmering, light-reflective finish. Unlike standard paint, metallic paint adds depth, movement, and a pearlescent effect to walls, furniture, and architectural surfaces. Sapphire Metallic Paint enhances both interior and exterior spaces with a rich, dimensional appearance that changes with lighting conditions.

Metallic paint is highly versatile and can be applied to a wide range of properly prepared surfaces. It is commonly used on interior and exterior walls, ceilings, trim, furniture, cabinets, and metal elements such as beams, gates, and railings. When applied correctly, metallic paint creates a durable, elegant finish suitable for residential, commercial, and hospitality environments.

For the most uniform and professional-looking finish, metallic paint should be applied using a spray system such as HVLP or airless sprayers. Spraying allows the metallic particles to distribute evenly, reducing visible streaks or roller marks. While brushes and rollers can be used, applying thin, consistent coats and maintaining a wet edge is essential to achieve a smooth metallic effect.

Yes, proper surface preparation and priming are essential for achieving the best results with metallic paint. A primer helps create a uniform base, improves adhesion, and enhances the final metallic appearance. For drywall, a PVA primer is recommended, while wood, metal, or previously painted surfaces should be prepared with a high-quality multipurpose primer.

Most high-quality metallic paints, including Sapphire Metallic Paint, typically require two coats to achieve full coverage and depth. Additional coats may be applied depending on the desired intensity of shimmer and surface conditions. Applying multiple thin layers ensures a more even, refined metallic finish compared to heavy application.

Yes, metallic paint can be used for exterior applications when properly sealed. Sapphire Metallic Paint is suitable for outdoor surfaces such as walls, metal features, and architectural details. For long-term durability and weather resistance, it is recommended to apply a protective clear coat over the finish.
