WHY MOROCCAN CLAY?

Moroccan Clay Plaster is the perfect choice for creating warm, natural interiors with depth and character. Hand-applied in thin layers, it transforms walls and ceilings into breathable, tactile surfaces that feel calm, balanced, and inherently organic. Crafted from clay and mineral ingredients, it supports healthier indoor environments while delivering a refined, artisanal aesthetic. Unlike synthetic finishes, Moroccan Clay Plaster embraces subtle texture and natural variation, creating spaces that feel grounded and timeless rather than rigid or uniform. Simply put, it offers beauty, comfort, and authenticity in one enduring, earth-based finish.

Application Tips:

Ready-mixed for convenience | Stir thoroughly before use:
Apply using a rounded edge stainless steel trowel in thin, even coats to build texture and depth. Recommended to use a Whiteout Trowel when applying light colors to prevent dark trowel marks. Two coats are typically recommended, allowing sufficient drying time between applications. After the final coat has dried, the surface may be lightly sanded with 220–320 grit sandpaper to refine texture and achieve the desired smoothness. For best results, new drywall should be primed with a PVA primer followed by Meoded’s Quartz Primer to ensure proper adhesion while flat previously painted surfaces only require a coat of Quartz Primer.

Versatility:

Ideal for interior walls and ceilings in residential and commercial spaces, including living areas, bedrooms, offices, and hospitality environments.

Coverage:

1 gallon covers approximately 120-140 sq. ft. for two coat application, depending on surface porosity and application style.

Moroccan Clay Instructions:

Surface Preparation – Surface should be smooth, clean and dust free. It is recommended to apply over level 5 drywall.

New Surface – Surface should be smooth, clean and dust free. Prime the substrate with the recommended water based primer as required; such as PVA primer for new drywall, multi-purpose primer for wood or glossy surfaces, and let it dry fully. Next apply one coat of Meoded Quartz Primer allowing it at least 3-5 hours to dry.

Existing Surface – Any surface with sheen should be sanded, dust free, and then primed with a water based multi-purpose primer letting it dry fully. Next apply one coat of Quartz Primer allowing it at least 3-5 hours to dry. Preparation of flat surfaces require only the application of Quartz Primer.

Application –  Use a stainless steel rounded edge trowel or spatula to apply the two coats of Moroccan Clay. If applying light colors, it is recommended to use Meoded’s Whiteout Trowel to avoid formation of dark trowel marks.

First Coat – First coat of Moroccan Clay should be applied thinly and evenly, covering the entire wall. Allow at least 8 hours for the base coat to dry.

Second Coat – If it’s necessary to smooth, lightly sand the first coat with 180-220 grit sandpaper before proceeding. Be sure to remove all dust and debris before proceeding. Apply the second coat using a tight, overlapping patch technique, spreading the material as far as it will naturally go without pressing too hard. Avoid heavy pressure, as this can create a minimal shine.

Sealer/Wax – After drying for at least 24 hours, applying a compatible sealer or wax helps protect the finish from moisture and dirt while making the surface easier to clean and maintain. For a soft, refined sheen and added protection, Hydrowax™ may be applied. Please contact Meoded to view the full sealer selection and determine the best option for your project.

Moroccan Clay FAQs

Yes. Moroccan Clay Plaster is very DIY-friendly and beginner-friendly because its fine clay-based formula spreads smoothly and naturally creates soft movement with a trowel. Its forgiving consistency allows homeowners and first-time applicators to achieve beautiful results, although testing on a sample board first is always recommended for learning technique.

Moroccan Clay Plaster works best on smooth interior surfaces such as Level 5 drywall, plaster, and properly prepared painted walls. For best adhesion, surfaces should first receive the correct primer, followed by Meoded Quartz Primer before application.

Moroccan Clay Plaster is typically applied in two thin coats. Its natural opacity and strong coverage usually allow full depth, texture, and color movement in just two applications, while a third coat may be added for additional dimension if desired.

Sealing Moroccan Clay Plaster is optional. In most interior spaces it performs beautifully unsealed, preserving natural breathability and matte softness. In high-traffic areas, kitchens, or places needing easier cleaning, a protective finish such as Hydrowax, Stain Shield, or PlasterGuard can be applied.

Yes. Moroccan Clay Plaster is made from natural clay and mineral ingredients, is low VOC, solvent free, breathable, and supports healthier indoor air quality. Its earth-based composition makes it a sustainable alternative to synthetic wall coatings.

Moroccan Clay Plaster uses natural clay minerals, while Roman Clay relies on gypsum. This gives Moroccan Clay better opacity, stronger coverage, greater breathability, and a richer hand-troweled appearance with fewer coats required for full depth.
