In Luxury Decorative Finishes, Samples Sell the Project
In the world of luxury decorative finishes, samples do far more than support the sale, they often become the sale itself.
Whether you specialize in Venetian plaster, limewash paint, microcement, metallic finishes, textured coatings, or any combination of custom wall treatments, a carefully curated sample collection is one of the most valuable tools you can bring into a client consultation or design presentation.
For interior designers, luxury contractors, plaster artisans, and decorative painters, physical samples bridge the gap between imagination and reality. They transform abstract concepts into tangible surfaces clients can see, touch, and experience firsthand. In high-end residential and commercial design, where texture, movement, sheen, and light reflection are critical to the final aesthetic, digital photography alone simply cannot communicate the full beauty, character and depth of a finish.
A professionally curated sample collection allows artisans and designers to showcase what makes their preferred decorative finishes so unique. It creates an opportunity to educate clients about finish styles, sealer options, sheen levels, and application techniques while helping them better understand how these finishes interact with lighting inside a space.

Why Are Decorative Finish Sample Boards Important?
Even in today’s digital-first design industry, physical sample boards remain one of the most effective design and sales tools available. Decorative finishes are tactile by nature. Clients want to feel the softness of a polished plaster, see the movement within a limewash finish, and observe how metallic coatings shift under changing light throughout the day.
For savvy designers and applicators, samples become an essential specification tool.
They help communicate aesthetic intent not only to the client but everyone involved in the project. When clients can physically compare textures, colors, and finish variations side-by-side, the decision-making process becomes significantly faster and more confident.
The most successful interior designers and specialty finish applicators are constantly refining and expanding their sample libraries. Their collections evolve alongside design trends, showcasing new textures, specialty techniques, layered applications, metallic effects, and curated designer color palettes. A thoughtfully assembled sample collection immediately enhances an applicator’s professionalism and a designer’s knowledge base, positioning them as true experts in their field.

How Do Sample Boards Help Clients Make Decisions Faster?
One of the biggest advantages of carrying a curated sample kit to appointments is how dramatically it reduces uncertainty during the design process. Specialty finishes can sometimes feel intimidating to clients because they are difficult to fully visualize before installation begins.
When homeowners and designers are able to interact directly with handmade samples in their own lighting and environment, hesitation often disappears. Designers can compare finishes directly against cabinetry, stone, fabrics, flooring, and furnishings while clients gain confidence in the texture, movement, and overall aesthetic.
Many decorative finish professionals find that bringing a complete sample collection to consultations virtually neutralizes indecision surrounding specialty finishes. Clients feel more comfortable approving colors, textures, and sheen levels because they can physically experience the finish instead of relying solely on imagination. That confidence often leads to faster approvals, smoother communication, and fewer revisions later in the project.

What Finishes Should Be Included in a Professional Sample Collection?
As decorative finishes become increasingly artistic and layered, specialty applications should also have their own dedicated sample collections. Fluted plaster finishes, for example, deserve a curated presentation showcasing different flute sizes, textures, profiles, colorways, and finish combinations.
These collections help clients understand the flexibility and customization available within a single finish category while inspiring designers to think more creatively about how decorative surfaces can be incorporated into a space.
Today’s luxury interiors increasingly feature layered decorative techniques, making it equally important to showcase advanced finish combinations such as metallic paint layered over plaster, glazes applied over textured surfaces, or velvety suede finishes with multidimensional movement. These layered sample collections position the applicator as a creative design partner capable of producing truly custom work rather than simply applying a finish, and allows designers to curate options for their clients.
Why Should You Showcase Sealer Variations With Twin Samples?
One of the most effective sample presentation strategies is creating twin samples of each finish and color, then sealing one version with Stain Shield and the other with HydroWax.
This simple but impactful presentation immediately demonstrates how dramatically a sealer can transform the appearance of a decorative finish. One sample may appear softer and more matte while the other develops a richer depth, enhanced movement, or elevated sheen.
Presenting both versions side-by-side allows designers and clients to better understand how the final finish will perform aesthetically while also creating opportunities for upgraded finish selections and easier decision-making.

Why Is the Mini Trowel Ideal for Sample Boards?
When creating smaller sample boards, scale matters. Large trowels can sometimes overpower small-format samples, causing movement and texture to appear unnatural or out of proportion.
The Meoded Mini Trowel has become an invaluable tool for decorative artisans because it allows for more controlled movement and realistic texture creation on smaller boards. This is especially important for plaster and velvet finishes where subtle movement and variation are essential to achieving an authentic handcrafted appearance.
Using a mini trowel helps applicators create small samples that accurately reflect the depth, movement, and elegance clients can expect on full-scale installations.

Decorative Finish Sample Boards FAQs
What are decorative finish sample boards?
Decorative finish sample boards are physical panels that showcase textures, colors, sheen levels, movement, and application techniques used in specialty finishes such as Venetian plaster, limewash paint, microcement, metallic coatings, fluted plaster, and decorative plaster finishes.
Why do interior designers use finish samples?
Interior designers use finish samples to evaluate texture, color, light reflection, movement, and compatibility with other materials before approving a finish specification. Samples also help clients understand how decorative finishes will look in real project lighting.
Are handmade finish samples better than digital images?
Yes. Handmade finish samples give clients a more accurate understanding of texture, depth, movement, sheen, and color variation than digital images alone. This is especially important for luxury decorative finishes that change appearance under different lighting conditions.
What should be included in a professional decorative finish sample collection?
A professional decorative finish sample collection should include core finishes such as Venetian plaster, limewash paint, microcement, decorative plaster, metallic finishes, fluted plaster, textured coatings, layered finish combinations, and sealer variations.
Does Meoded sell premade samples?
A: Yes. Email info@meodedpaint.com to request a premade sample in the texture and color of your choice. Samples start around $12 each plus shipping.
What is the best board to create plaster samples?
A: We recommend thin MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) panels. Usually available at big box stores like Home Depot. Sand, clean and use Meoded Quartz Primer first, prior to plaster applications.
How do you create fluted plaster sample boards?
A: We recommend using a long MDF panel to start. Clean, prep and prim with 2 coats of Meoded Quartz Primer. Then spread a thick bodied lime plaster like Meoded Intonaco with your trowel. It has to be thick and even. Then with Meoded Fluted Plaster Tools, rake the plaster all at once down the long board. Fill gaps as needed. Once dry, use a circular saw to cut into smaller sample board pieces. Sand any rough edges and clean to finish.
